MANILA, June 2 – Representatives of the Armed Forces of the Philippines comprising the Joint Security Control Centers (JSCCs) have intensified their coordination with the Philippine National Police and the Commission on Elections for the conduct of special elections on Thursday in selected areas of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Soldiers are now deployed to secure three clustered precincts in Poblacion Glan, Sarangani; two clustered precincts in Barangay Buenos Aires in Pagsanghan, Western Samar; 20 clustered precincts in Barangays Danapah, Kalih, Bato-Bato, Apil-Apil, Bucalo, Sangkahan, Cambug and Look Bisaya in Al Barka, Basilan.

Troops are also concentrated in the municipalities where the Comelec earlier declared total or partial failure of the May 10 elections, including Sultan Dumalondong, Lumba Bayabao, Maisu, Tubaran, Lumbaca-Unayan, Marogong and Bayang, Buadipuso Buntong, Kapai, Marantao, Calanogas, Ganassi, Lumbatan, Pagayawan and Tugaya in Lanao del Sur; as well as in Barangays Upper Mahayahay and Lower Mahayahay in Maluso, Basilan.

“By the guidance of the Comelec, our security operations are now more focused on these areas. Our job of addressing other threats will not be affected anymore. JSCC representatives in the aforementioned areas were directed to coordinate with their PNP and Comelec counterparts for security measures. Air assets are also deployed strategically to support the elections. We would like to show those who intend to sow violence that the armed forces is in control of the security,” AFP chief Gen. Delfin N. Bangit said.

Brig. Gen. Rey Ardo, commander of the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade, said "more or less 1,500 troops are deployed in the seven municipalities in Lanao" where total election failure was declared by the poll body.

In Sarangani, troops of the 73rd Infantry Battalion are set to guard the polling precincts while roughly 100 soldiers are in position to secure affected areas in Basilan.

Two platoons from the 87th infantry Battalion will secure the lone affected barangay in Western Samar. (PNA)
