MANILA, May 31 –- Persons with disabilities (PWDs) takes center stage during the 37th World Environment Day (WED) on June 4 at the Riverbanks Center in Marikina City, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said Monday.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Horacio Ramos said the observance of the World Environment Day every June 5 affirms the quality and breath of engagements the department has taken to get all sectors into mainstream environmentalism as a form of good citizenship.

This year’s theme of the World Environment Day is “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.”

Under the local theme, “Isang Mundo + Samutsaring Buhay = Isang Kinabukasan,” PWDs, along with their caregivers from various concerned organizations, will be given lectures and workshops on climate change and biodiversity by technical people from the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the DENR.

The lectures give emphasis on what roles they can play to strengthen local efforts to improve environmental stewardship.

After which, they will join DENR and local officials, led by DENR Secretary Horacio Ramos and Marikina City Mayor, in a tree planting activity in the area.

Expected to join the celebration are the Autism Society of the Philippines, Cerebral Palsied Association of the Philippines, Resources for the Blind, Tahanang Walang Hagdanan and the like.

To lend more meaning to the celebration, the activity will be held in Marikina at the Riverbanks in tribute to the victims of Typhoon Undoy. (PNA)
