MANILA, May 24 — The House of Representatives is eyeing to finish canvassing of votes for president and vice president by June 4 so that a new president could be proclaimed immediately.

Presiding over a caucus of congressmen Monday afternoon, Speaker Prospero Nograles said they aim to finish canvassing by June 4 and hopes that there will be few discrepancies in the tally of the votes.

He said the votes for president and vice president would be canvassed simultaneously and, thus, proclamation of winners would be concurrent as well.

Nograles said he expects the rules on canvassing would be approved within the day, so that canvassing by both Chambers of Congress — the House of Representatives and the Senate — which will convene in a joint session to act as National Board of Canvassers, could begin by Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Ballot boxes containing printouts of electronically transmitted certificates of canvass (CoCs) are expected to arrive at the Batasan complex starting Monday night.

Nograles earlier assured that the coming presidential and vice presidential canvass of votes will never compromise the accuracy and integrity of the count for speed.

"We assure the Filipino people and the international community that we are not going to sacrifice accuracy or the integrity of the count for speed," he stressed.

Congress has until June 30 from the date of the elections to complete and satisfy its constitutional mandate to act as the national board of canvassers for the two top posts of the land, from the counting to the proclamation of the actual winners. (PNA)
