MANILA, May 19 – Newly-appointed Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona on Wednesday clarified that he was not calling the media for interview, instead, he was the one invited by the media.

The Chief Magistrate made the clarification in light of reports of the alleged "media blitz" of Corona.

Corona reasoned out that his gracing of the media invitations was for the public to know and recognize what kind of person the new Chief Justice is.

He said that the comments against his appointment as Chief Justice can only be considered as "political noise".

Nonetheless, Corona said, the work at the Supreme Court is not affected such that Chief Justice Reynato Puno retired a week after the presidential elections.

Likewise, Corona explained that he did not apply for the said position, but rather, the nominees of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) went through the "eye of the needle" or stringent process wherein even their public and private lives were scrutinized.

Corona said that it's not his fault that a Chief Justice of the SC retired.

He stressed that the incumbent President is mandated by the Constitution to fill up the vacancy in the Judiciary within 90 days upon the occurrence of such vacancy. (PNA)
