2 robbers slain in a shootout with cops

MANILA, May 19 –Two alleged robbers were killed while two others escaped during a shootout with lawmen after they pulled a robbery inside a jeep in Sta. Cruz, Manila on Wednesday.

Police identified one of the fatalities as Marvin Calabayan, alias “Biboy,” 20, of 2637 Lico St., Tondo, Manila.

Police described the second fatality as between 20 and 25 years old and 5’6” tall. The two were reportedly both members of the notorious Sputnik robbery gang.

Two other cohorts of the slain suspects eluded arrest.

Police Officer 3 Jaime Gonzales, of the Manila Police District homicide section, said the incident occurred at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday when the four alleged robbers announced the heist at the corner of T Mapua and Laguna Sts., in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Jerry Abucayon, 28, janitor of Mercury Drugstore in Quiapo, said he was aboard the passenger jeep with a route to Gasak and Recto Ave., in Manila while on his way to his work when two of the four robbers posing as passenger boarded the vehicle.

Upon reaching Laguna St., the two immediately ordered the unidentified driver to stop the vehicle as they announced the heist.

The two other companions including Calabayan who posted outside the vehicle reportedly pulled out handguns and poked it to at least 10 passengers inside the vehicle.

The two robbers divested the passengers of mobile phones, cash and other valuables.

However, the commotion inside the passenger jeep caught the attention of the MPD Blumentritt Police Community Precinct (PCP) Station 3 under Inspector Ed Morata, who immediately responded in the scene.

The robbers reportedly opened fire at the responding policemen prompting them to retaliate. Two robbers were later killed while their two companions eluded arrest.

Authorities are now conducting investigation on the case. (PNA) LOR/JES
