PCG rescues ailing Filipino crewman of Panama-flagged vessel off Fraile Island

MANILA, May 14 — Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel rescued on Thursday an ailing Filipino crew member of a Panama-flagged vessel while navigating off El Fraile Island near the mouth of Manila Bay.

Reports said that at 3:34 p.m. Thursday, the Coast Guard Command Center received a telephone call from the skipper of the "MV Penda Bulker," Capt. Arturo E. Carreon, requesting medical evacuation for the vessel's Filipino crewman identified as Vircelito L. Mendoza, 42, who was suffering from acute appendicitis.

The Panamanian-registered vessel's last port of call was at Virginia in the United States, and it was en route to Akogawa, Japan.

The bulk carrier was then at the vicinity of El Fraile Island situated at the mouth of Manila Bay and south of Corregidor Island when the PCG received the request for medical evacuation of Mendoza.

The PCG immediately directed a Coast Guard helicopter with a medical officer on board to render render assistance.

Medical evacuation was undertaken and the patient was subsequently taken to the Manila Doctors Hospital for proper medication. (PNA) scs/JES
