Families still grip Iloilo politics in 2010 polls

ILOILO CITY, May 13 – Political families still dominate largely the political power in the province and clearly shows the monolithic hold of the rich and the famous, giving political dynasty the same old tag.

In the first district, the Garins headed by patriarch, Philippine Coconut Administrator Oscar Garin held sway for several years with unopposed daughter-in-law congresswoman Janette Garin, son Richard Garin as new vice governor of Iloilo, and wife Ninfa Garin as municipal mayor of San Joaquin.

Garin’s daughter Christine Garin was unopposed as municipal mayor of Guimbal town and another daughter, Sharon as first nominee of partylist Aambis-OWA.

In the second district, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) director general Augusto “Boboy” Syjuco easily beat his opponent and replaced his wife Judy Jalbuena Syjuco as the new congressman.

The returning Syjuco was the district’s representative for three terms before relinquishing his position to his wife and became TESDA head in 2007.

In the third district, congressman Arthur Defensor Sr. successfully recaptured the provincial capitol as the incoming new governor of the province while his son, Arthur Defensor Jr. easily beat his opponents as new third district congressman.

In the fourth district, congressman Ferjenel Biron was reelected. So is his father Hernan Biron Sr. as municipal mayor of Barotac Nuevo and another brother, Hernan Biron Jr. as board member of the fourth district.

In northern Iloilo, the Fifth congressional district was successfully captured by reelectionist congressman Niel Tupas, Jr. against his first cousin Rolex Suplico.

Other winning Tupas siblings are incoming Barotac Viejo mayor Niel “Beng” Tupas III, son-in-law Parly Balleza as Sangguniang Bayan member, as well as Nielo Tupas for fifth district board member.

In Iloilo city, another Tupas son, Neilex “Lex” Tupas is a consistent contender as number one city councilor.

However, the Tupas patriarch, Iloilo governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. failed on his bid for congressman of the fourth district. So with another son, Raul “Boboy” Tupas who failed to win as provincial governor.

In other Iloilo municipalities, brothers Matt and Mark Palabrica were reelected as municipal mayor and vice mayor respectively of Bingawan town.

In Pavia, reelectionist mayor Arcadio Gorriceta made it again while sister-in-law Marina Gorriceta is frontrunner as mayor of the municipality of San Miguel.

In Miagao town, mayor Gerardo Flores won as board member while his wife Julieta Flores made a successful comeback as municipal mayor.

In the component city of Passi, the main protagonists are city mayor Jesry Palmares leading the count against his cousin Hope Palmares Lapating and several Palmares relatives in other local positions. (PNA) RMA/LCPendon
