Two mayor bodyguards killed in shootout with rival in DavSur

MALALAG, Davao del Sur, May 9 – Bodyguards of warring politicians in Malalag here were engaged Saturday night in a shootout when they accidentally met in a barangay killing a retired Army master sergeant and a civilian while wounding another civilian.

Malalag police identified the casualties as retired Army Sergeant James Salmorin and a certain Bobong Magallanes and the wounded as Marcos Winlove. While those they had a firefight were known as Private First Class Ireneo Lozada and Corporal Eddie Aquino, both of 39th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.

Salmorin, Magallanes and Winlove are bodyguards of incumbent Malalag Mayor Ruel Paras while the two active soldiers were bodyguards of former mayor Jovil Mamaril, who running against Paras in this elections.

Malalag police chief Sr. Inspector Elmer Cabuslay said based on their initial investigations, the two groups were both campaigning at Barangay Bulac, Malalag, Davao del Sur and eventually met their ways.

In a separate interview, 39th Infantry Battalion commander Col. Lyndon Paniza admitted that Lozada and Aquino were his men detailed as security escorts of Mamaril.

Upon his verification on the incident, Paniza said the bodyguards of Mayor Paras were the ones who fired on the group of Mamaril prompting his men to fire back resulting to a shootout.

Reports said Paras was not around when the shootout happened while Mamaril was with his security escorts during that time.

As of presstime, Cabuslay said that they have now in their custody the two active soldiers figured in shootout.

The incident happened as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) placed under their control the province of Davao del Sur and Davao City. (PNA) FFC/JLC/lvp
