Ilocos Sur now free from PAGs

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO, San Fernando City, May 9 — The province of Ilocos Sur is now free from Partisan Armed Groups (PAGs).

Ilocos Sur was the first province in Region 1 to have been cleared from PAGs, setting a model for all other provinces –Pangasinan, La Union and Ilocos Sur– to follow.

This was based on the latest list of validated PAGs from the PNP National Headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Region 1 police director Police Chief Supt. Constante D. Azares Jr. expressed satisfaction over the positive development even as he commended the Ilocos Sur police for effectively handling the PAG situation in that province.

“Our Special Task Group (STG) in Ilocos Sur formed to go against PAGs and the whole Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office under Police Sr. Supt. Eduardo Dopale, have done a good job in neutralizing these illegal groups,” said Azares.

The Regional Director pointed out that the constant monitoring and checkpoint operations, coupled by intensified application and service of search warrants conducted by STG and Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office have greatly restricted the movements of PAG members in the province, rendering them ineffective.

Azares stressed, however, that the whole Region 1 police shall maintain its vigilance in view of reports of the emergence of new PAGs in other provinces of the region.

“We shall even intensify our police operations in coordination with other law enforcement agencies and the community at large,” he vowed, as he also urged every citizen to do his or her part in ensuring honest, orderly and peaceful elections on May 10.

"This is our shared responsibility,” said Azares quoting previous public pronouncements of PNP Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa on the need for the efficient implementation of HOPE (honest, orderly and peaceful elections) in Region 1. (PNA)
