5.5-magnitude earthquake jolts eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, May 9 — A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Indonesia's Maluku province on Sunday, but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

According to the website of Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Physical Geography Agency (BMG), the quake struck at 11:02 a.m. local time (0202 GMT), with the epicenter at 8.53 degrees south latitude and 129.17 degrees east longitude at a depth of 119 kilometers.

The epicenter was 246 km southwest of Maluku province's Saumlaki regency and 398 km northeast of Timor Leste's capital Dili.

BMG has not issued tsunami alert for the quake. (PNA/Xinhua)
