MANILA, May 2 — Influential religious leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy on Sunday evening endorsed Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro Jr. for the upcoming May 10 elections.
"Tonight let it be known to all Filipinos that the Almighty Father has appointed the President of this nation. He is no other than Gilbert 'Gibo' Teodoro," said Quiboloy.
Quiboloy, founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ: The Name Above Every Name, made the announcement during the congregation’s annual Thanksgiving and Worship concert at its compound in Catitipan, Davao City, which was attended by more than 50,000 members, and aired live worldwide over the group’s Sonshine Media Network.
With this proclamation, the Pastor said, "I may either sink or swim, but I know this decision is best for the nation."
Before finally naming Gibo, Quiboloy said: "We have seen the heart of this man in his stint as the secretary of national defense. He resisted the temptation of turning his DND projects into big media blitzes."
Gibo, a former Defense Secretary, emerged to a rousing applause from the crowd.
"I am thankful to our beloved pastor (for this anointment)," he said.
Quiboloy was supposed to identify the presidential bet he would endorse last April 25, his 60th birthday, but deferred it to May 2 because, according to him, the "Divine revelation wasn’t yet clear at the time."
Presidential, vice presidential and senatorial candidates, as well as local bets, graced the pastor’s birthday celebration in the hope Quiboloy would pick his choice.
Although Quiboloy did not make any endorsement during his 60th birthday celebration, Davao-based news dailies reported the day after that the pastor’s actions and statements that Sunday hinted that Gibo was the chosen one.
The influential religious leader, with six million followers all over the world, has dropped broad hints on who he will be supporting in a chance interview with reporters during his birthday.
He said that the candidate he would support should be "magaling at matalino" (skillful and intelligent).
Gibo’s campaign slogan is "Galing and Talino."
Asked to describe who his personal choice for the presidential seat, Pastor Quiboloy said: "Competent at karapat-dapat. Talagang makikita mo na pwede siya. Na maipagmamalaki mo kahit sa international community because we are not an isolated nation. We also have to deal with the nations around us. Magaling at matalino."
Meanwhile, former Press Secretary Mike Toledo, spokesman of Gibo and director of G1bo Media Bureau, in a radio interview, said that the endorsement of the religious pastor is a big boost in the candidacy of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential bet.
"Siya (Quiboloy) ay malaking tulong sa kandidatura ni Gibo. Mahalagang mahalaga ang suporta ni Pastor Quiboloy," he said.
Toledo said that Gibo's clear-cut platform of governance may have played a big role why he was the one chosen for president. (PNA)
