STA. BARBARA, Pangasinan, April 22 — Two sons of this town who were conferred by the province with the Asna awards during the recent 430th founding anniversary of Pangasinan were commended by the municipal government here.

“We commend Police Superintendent Eric E. Noble and Santiago B. Villafania for giving honor and prestige to our beloved hometown Sta. Barbara,” said town mayor Reynaldo V. Velasco.

The two Asna awardees received plaques of recognition and appreciation from the municipal government during a flag raising ceremony last Monday here.

“These achievements are in line with our 10-Point Progress Agenda particularly in the area of Values Formation and Strengthening," Velasco said.

He said that the examples shown by these two achievers once again exemplified leadership by example, expressing hope that others will follow so that Sta. Barbara will be known not only in Pangasinan but also the whole country.

Noble, former Sta. Barbara Police chief and a recipient of two earlier major national awards namely, the Country's Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS) sponsored by the Metrobank Foundation and Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award, was named one of the 11 Outstanding Pangasinenses in the field of Community Service.

On the other hand, Villafania, a Pangasinan poet now based in Cavite, is recognized for promoting and developing the Pangasinan language through his writings.

The Sanggunian Bayan, on motion of Councilor Miraflor Ocampo passed Resolution Numbers 2010-478 and 479 and signed by Vice Mayor Ruben Jose, cited that the achievements of both Noble and Villafania brought pride and honor not only to their family and colleagues but to the entire municipality of Sta. Barbara.

Asna, a Pangasinan word which means salt, is used to describe a person of good character.

The other awardees were former President Fidel V. Ramos and Fransisco Sionil Jose who received the highest awards– the Balitok awards.

Former Department of Trade and Industry Director Jaime Lucas received a special award for being a pioneer propagator of Pangasinan language. Seven other received the Asna award. (PNA)
