'Bay Cruiser' suffers engine fire off Corregidor Island, 131 passengers safely ferried back to Manila

MANILA, April 10 –A ferry carrying 131 passengers suffered engine fire as it approached Corregidor Island on Saturday afternoon, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

Belated reports reaching the PCG headquarters in Manila revealed at 12:50 p.m. Saturday, the Bay Cruiser, which ferries passengers from Manila to Corregidor Island, had a fire on her port auxiliary engine before it could safely dock.

The ferry had 131 passengers on board when the incident happened.

Initial investigation said that a short circuit on the auxiliary engine’s electrical wiring which overheated had caused the fire.

No injury or casualty has been reported.

The manager of Sun Cruiser, which also ferries passengers to Corregidor Island, requested from personnel of Coast Guard Station Bataan for the availability of Supercat-25 to ferry the stranded passengers back to Manila.

At 8 p.m. of the same day, the Supercat-25 of Aboitiz Shipping Lines safely ferried the 131 passengers back to Manila which docked at the back of the Mall of Asia.(PNA) RMA/JES
