BERLIN, April 8 — German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Wednesday praised U.S. nuclear strategy a "historic " step toward global nuclear disarmament.

"It is a historic thing that U.S., a leading nuclear power in the world, renounced the development of new nuclear warheads and limited its usage of the nuclear weapons," said Westerwelle.

U.S. new nuclear strategy will help German government remove the last remaining U.S. nuclear arms in Germany, he said.

"This provides a tailwind for the government to reach its goal, " Westerwelle said. He also promised to address this issue at an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Tallin on April 22-23.

Westerwell also urged Iran to give up its own nuclear ambitions, saying Iran should be clear about that now "international community is serious about disarmament."

"Iran should once again be ready to talk and transparently renounce any option of nuclear armament," he said. (PNA/Xinhua)
