MANILA, April 5 — A South Korean-owned ship with a reported 19 Filipino and five Korean crew members was seized Sunday by Somali pirates northeast of Somalia’s basin, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported on Monday.

The information relayed by the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi also indicated that the “M/V Samho Dream” was en route to Louisiana in the USA from Iraq, but not what its cargo was.

As the spate of off-monsoon maritime piracy off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden has apparently resumed after a lull, DFA reported that the latest incident brings to 24 the number of Filipino seafarers held captive by Somali pirates.

The DFA's Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers' Affairs said it is closely coordinating with the vessel's principal, the local manning agency and the Philippine embassies in Nairobi and Seoul for the early resolution of the case.

DFA’s standing policy is not to give ransoms. (PNA)
