MANILA , April 4 — Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company (Metrobank) chairman Antonio S. Abacan Jr. was recently conferred the Doctor’s Degree in Business Administration, honoris causa, by the Philippine Women’s University (PWU).

The award, presented during the commencement exercises of the university, served to honor Abacan’s contributions to the Philippine banking industry as well as the business community.

“I am humbled and honored to accept (this) honoris causa,” Abacan said in his speech, “I place great value on education because it inspired me to aim for leadership, while staying true to my personal values of honesty and hard work.”

Abacan has led a distinguished banking career that spans over 40 years. After graduating from the Mapua Institute of Technology with a degree in banking and finance, he started out as a clerk and rose from the ranks to become Metrobank's chair and vice chairman.

Many of the bank’s business accomplishments can be attributed to Abacan.

Together with group chairman and founder George S.K. Ty, he spearheaded Metrobank’s aggressive network expansion locally and globally.

The bank has successfully established its presence overseas — in the U.S., Europe, Canada, and most of Asia.

It also holds the distinction of being the first Philippine bank to open a branch in mainland China.

Under Abacan’s leadership, Metrobank became the country’s leading and largest Philippine financial institution.

His achievements in his field recently earned him the award for The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) for banking and finance.

Addressing the graduating class of PWU, Abacan offered words of wisdom and encouragement: “Leadership is a quality that I know PWU aims to instill in its students. Leadership begins with being the best that you can possibly be. When you are at your best, then it follows that you become the best even to others. True leadership is a consistent and continuous commitment to perform at your full potential.”

“I hope to bring greater integrity to this honoris causa through my continued service in Metrobank and its group of companies, and ultimately, the entire business community,” Abacan said in closing.

Metrobank is the country’s premier universal bank. The Bank has an extensive consolidated network that spans over 1,150 automated teller machines (ATMs) nationwide, 720 local branches, and 35 foreign branches, subsidiaries and representative offices. (PNA)
