4 vacationers drown in Batangas

BATANGAS CITY, April 3 – Four people on a Lenten holiday drowned in various beaches in this province during the observance of Lent from Wednesday until Friday, Batangas Provincial Police Office (BPPO) said Saturday.

BPPO director Senior Superintendent Alberto Supapo said on Holy Wednesday, March 31, Timoteo Reyes, 19 of Mabini, Batangas was sailing with his friend at Balayan Bay in Mabini, Batangas when their boat capsized due to strong current and big waves around 5:30 p.m.

Reyes was thrown off the water and drowned. His body was retrieved the next day around 50 meters away from the coastline, Supapo said.

In Lemery town, victim Gener Bolante, a resident of Lipa City, was swimming along the beach of Balayan Bay in Barangay Nonong Castro with his friends when he drowned at around 9:00 am on Maundy Thursday.

Bolante was rushed to the Provincial Hospital in Lemery, Batangas but declared dead on arrival by attending physician, Dr. Amelia Ponio.

In San Nicolas town, friends Jenilyn Bathan, 20, of Barangay Bangin, San Nicolas, Batangas, and Roger Patrick Malaluan, 22, of the University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, Quezon City, also drowned while swimming at Pansipit River in Barangay Bangin around 5:30 pm on Good Friday. (PNA)
