MANILA, March 29 – Various emergency units and humanitarian groups nationwide including the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) are all set to provide first aid assistance and ambulance service on major roads for the Holy Week, authorities said Monday.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD), for its part, have tightened security and ensured smooth flow of traffic at the Balintawak Toll Plaza and the bus terminals in Cubao, Quezon City.

Many commuters are already trooping to the bus terminals at the Araneta Center Bus Terminal in Cubao for a ride home in the provinces.

For its part, the PRC Chapters are on standby 24/7 this Holy Week to provide first aid and medical assistance to possible road accidents that may happen.

PRC secretary Gwendolyn Pang said the PRC Safety Services Department will also put up tents, help desks and first aid stations along major highways and gas stations during Holy Week for immediate response in case of road accidents.

Beach resorts and major tourist spots all over the country will also be the focus of Safety Services as they put up Beach Patrol and First Aid Stations.

PRC partnered with Chevron and Petron for the stationing of first aid stations and ambulances.

Chevron Philippines has designated 40 Caltex gas stations in Northern and Southern Luzon that will be manned by two Red Cross volunteers with first aid station and ambulance at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEx).

Traffic along the North Luzon Expressway is expected to be unusually high during the coming Holy Week on March 29 to April 3, NLEx operator Tollways Management Corporation (TMC) and Manila North Tollways Corporation said today.

“We anticipate that the needs of motorists will be greater and that the requirements for safety will likewise be higher,” said Alec C. Cruz, MNTC assistant vice president for motorist facilities and special projects.

PRC Volunteers from Valenzuela, Pampanga, La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Baguio, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Olongapo City, Laguna, San Pablo City, Batangas City, Cavite and Quezon Lucena chapters are mobilized to man gas stations and provide first-aid assistance.

On the other hand, for Petron partnership, PRC will provide ambulance service in stations located in Mabalacat and Floridablanca, Pampanga; and Southern Tagalog Region (Star) Tollway.

Pang also added that this season is the right time to implement Safety Services Program because many are on vacation and therefore this season is prone to accident and emergencies.

“We have various programs which are very relevant and practical to implement this season,” Pang said

The PRC Safe Summer Campaign covers safety institute, first aid and basic life support training and even swimming courses which are timely for summer.

First Aid and Basic Life Support Courses are the most requested training from different companies, schools, rescue groups and individuals which aim to disseminate information on safety practices during emergency situations.

On the other hand, basic life support–cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS–CPR) training focuses on life threatening emergency situations which deals not only with the adult victims but for children and infants as well. (PNA)
