ZAMBOANGA CITY, March 20 — The Philippine Army has completed the rehabilitation and construction of a P4.5-million farm-to-market road project in the province of Davao del Sur, military officials said.

Capt. Emmanuel Garcia, Army's 10th Infantry Division public affairs officer, said the four-kilometer farm-to-market road project was turned over Friday afternoon to the municipal government of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Garcia said the project, which was undertaken by the Army's 512th Engineering Construction Battalion, was funded by the Department of National Defense (DND) through the Kalayaan sa Barangay Program (KBP) with the recommendations of the 39th and 72nd Infantry Battalions.

The DND’s programs are aimed at uplifting the living conditions of the residents in the countryside and geared towards the attainment of peace by way of providing the basic services to the people.

The peace and development infrastructure projects of the DND range from farm-to-market roads, school buildings, barangay water systems, rural electrification projects, day care centers and health centers.

Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of the Army's 10th Infantry Division, turned over the project on behalf of the DND to the municipal government of Sta. Cruz.

“Our government’s commitment through the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) to provide basic services and alleviate the economic condition of our people has inched another step through this farm-to-market road project,” Holganza said.

“The people of Davao del Sur, LGU (Local Government Unit) and other stakeholders are the true heroes in the realization of this KBP project by giving their wholehearted support and cooperation,” he added.

He said more projects are set to be completed this year in Davao region, citing the ongoing implementation of P99 million worth of KBP projects.

Last year, Davao region was a recipient of P76.9 million worth of infrastructure projects implemented through the KBP of the DND.

Military and LGU officials are hopeful that more peace and development projects will be poured into Davao region, being one of the national priority areas in the country where the presence of threats to national development is commonly felt. (PNA) scs/Teofilo P. Garcia/jsd
