MANILA, March 14 — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reported that more than 700,000 voters were found to have double or multiple registrations for the coming May 10, 2010 polls.
In an en banc resolution, the poll body said that based on the records of the Information and Technology Department (ITD), they unraveled 704,542 voters who have multiple registration records.
“Using algorithmic matching, the Comelec-ITD reported that 704,542 voters have double or multiple registration records,” said the resolution which was promulgated last March 10.
With the discovery, the Comelec en banc said they immediately ordered the removal of the names that have several registrations.
Likewise, the poll body directed members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) not to allow these voters to vote in their respective precincts in the May 10 polls.
However, in accordance with an earlier resolution by the commission, cases wherein registrations are found to be in different districts/cities/municipalities, the latest registration shall be retained.
“Accordingly, they shall be allowed to vote only in the district/city/municipality of their latest registration,” said the Comelec minute resolution issued in October last year.
It noted that in cases where the multiple registrations are found to be within the same district/city/municipality, the original registration shall prevail.
Earlier, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) relayed to the commission the 40,000 multiple registrants they have discovered in Davao City and Davao del Sur.
On the other hand, the Kontra-Daya group also reported that the voters’ list is padded by no less than five million. (PNA) scs/FGP/utb
