BOGOTA, March 12 — U.S. President Barack Obama praised the effort of Colombia to respect judicial independence, officials said Thursday.
In a letter to Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, Obama hailed Uribe's decision to respect the ruling of the Constitutional Court on Feb. 26, which rejected a referendum that will allow Uribe to seek a third consecutive term.
Uribe said he respected the ruling of the court.
Obama said Uribe has given an invaluable example of how all the citizens should follow the law and accept the decisions of the democratic institutions of their country.
Obama reaffirmed U.S. commitments to Colombia and said both governments would work to strengthen the cooperation and friendship. (PNA/Xinhua) ALM/rsm
