DepEd approves higher tuition fees in 15 schools

CEBU CITY, March 5 – The Department of Education (DepEd) 7 has approved the application for tuition fee increase of 15 private elementary and high schools in Central Visayas.

Dr. Marcial Degamo, head of DepEd 7 Quality Assurance and Accountability Division, said there are 615 private elementary and secondary schools in Central Visayas, but only 30 have applied for a tuition increase for the 2010-2011 academic year that begins in June.

Only the applications of 15 have so far been approved because the 15 others have yet to complete the requirements.

DepEd 7 Director Recaredo Borgonia said the increase proposed by the schools ranged from five to 10 percent.

The list of grade and high schools applying for tuition increase will be made public once it is finalized, he added.

”I hope there will be no more applicants to increase their tuition, because of the economic crisis,” said Degamo.

In applying for a tuition increase, schools have to submit a detailed schedule of the proposed tuition and other school fees. They also have to submit minutes of the consultations with students and parents, showing they agree to the increase.

Other requirements include a certification of allocation, as proof that 70 percent of the tuition increase implemented during the previous school year went to teachers’ salaries and 20 percent to the improvement of school facilities.

Only 10 percent of the increase can be taken as the school’s profit.

Degamo said the most common reason the schools cited in their letter of intent to increase school fees is to upgrade facilities. (PNA)
