MANILA, Feb. 17 — The College of St. Benilde (CSB) Blazers late Tuesday pulled off a twin victory after it swept the seniors and juniors divisions of the 85th NCAA football competition at the football field inside the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

More importantly, the Blazers pulled off the biggest surprise of the tournament after they eked out a shock 1-0 victory over the powerhouse Lions, the champions in the past eight seasons, to snatch the seniors crown.

The Taft-based booters, thus, finished with an 8-1-1 (win-loss-draw) record as it foiled San Beda’s nine-peat feat bid.

CSB made it a double celebration after its high school squad dealt San Beda a double blackeye with a 3-0 smashing. victory.

It was the Junior Blazers’ 11th straight win to top the event organized by a league committee chaired by Mike del Mundo of Perpetual Help.

Football, the most popular sporting event in the world but not so much in the country, is the second to the last event in the NCAA calendar.

The oldest and one of the most prestigious leagues, headed this year by president Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB, and Management Committee chair Jose Mari Lacson, will cap its successful season with the staging centerpiece athletics on March 1 at the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Oval. (PNA) DCT/LOR
