KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 9 — The national rugby squad will need approval from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and the National Sports Council (NSC) before taking part in the Commonwealth and Asian Games at the end of this year.

Malaysian Rugby Union (MRU) general manager Nabil Ahmad Marzuki said, nevertheless, Malaysia's chances of competing in both events were good as sponsors did not impose any requirements such as ranking or eligibility points.

"The union just needs approval from the OCM and NSC. The national team is currently carrying out training as usual and will heighten training prior to the meets," he told Bernama here Tuesday.

Rugby was first introduced at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, as well as at the Asian Games in Bangkok the same year.

However, Malaysia have yet to win any medals at the two meets.

Commonwealth Games will be held in New Delhi, India, from October 3 to 14 while the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, from November 13 to 21. (PNA/Bernama) vcs/utb
