Davao census coordinators to convene for 2010 population, housing surveys

DAVAO CITY, Feb. 9 – The National Statistics Office (NSO) Davao is now preparing for convening all regional census coordinators on Feb. 24 for the preparation of this year’s surveys on population and housing as mandated by Batas Pambansa No. 72 in the Davao Region.

NSO regional director Jaime Paler said 2010 is a year for census on population and housing and NSO is mandated to hold census on population and housing which started in 1980, 1990 and 2000.

Paler said a special census was undertaken in 2007 as requested by the local government units (LGUs).

“This year is a year for census on population and housing throughout the country and this month, February, is Civil Registration month-long celebration," he said.

Paler said set to convene are Regional Census Coordinating Board chaired by National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) regional director, the NSO regional director, as the Chief Executive Officer, in preparation for the coming census.

“We will likewise convene our City and Municipal Census Coordinating Board chaired by the local chief executive,” he said.

Paler said for this year, their census on population and housing will be more comprehensive.

“This year’s census (including surveys) on population and housing will have three kinds of questionnaires to be answered by every household. Enumerators, mostly composed of teachers, will be visiting every houses starting May 17 (just a week after election) and will end on Jun 11, this year,” he explained.

He said included in this questionnaires are the recommended variables as considered by the United Nation.

“At present, we are closely coordinating with our local officials, leaders and barangay officials to get their support for the success of this year’s comprehensive census," he said.

"Once completed, we will have a complete comparison on the increase of our population per region, cities, provinces and barangays,” he added.

In a latest census on population and housing in 2000, NSO regional office reported that Davao City was the largest population in Southern Mindanao in terms of population size.

Davao City contributed 22.11 percent to the 5.2 million population in the region.

At the national level, the city shared 1.50 percent to the total population of 76.5 million as recorded in the Census 2000.

Davao City recorded a total population of 1,147,116 persons in the 2000 Census on Population and Housing. This was up by 140,276 persons as compared to 1,006,840 persons recorded in the 1995 Census on Population (POPCEN).

For the period 1995 to 2000, the annual population growth rate for Davao City was 2.83 percent, lower than that of the 1990 to 1995 period (3.22 percent).

If the current annual population growth rate of the city continues, the population of Davao City was expected to double in 24 years.

Davao City is composed of three districts, of which district one and two had the biggest population with 36.42 percent each, while district three with 27.16 percent of the provincial population.

City’s Barangay Buhangin (Poblacion) was the biggest in 2000 census in terms of population size, accounting for 5.51 percent of the total. This barangay is part of the city’s second district.(PNA)
