MANILA, Feb. 8 —The death of a Filipino supermarket worker in Haiti has been officially confirmed with the recovery early Sunday of her body from under the rubble of her workplace, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday.

The Central National Equipment Retrieval team, assisted by Corporal Eric Dedales and Senior Navy Officer I Carlo Dangcalan of the Philippine peacekeeping contingent to Haiti, retrieved the remains of Mary Grace Fabian on Feb. 7 from the building flattened by a magnitude-7 earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, DFA said, quoting Lieutenant Colonel Lope Dagoy, Commander of the contingent.

Fabian was positively identified by a friend, Lowel Lalican, whose wife, Geraldine Lalican, remained missing and believed trapped in the same area.

Lowell has decided to remain in Haiti until his wife's body is recovered. He identified Fabian through her uniform, hair and necklace, Dagoy reported.

Fabian’s sister, Rosalyn, reportedly agreed to immediately bury her sister at the National Cemetery in Port-au-Prince.

The Philippine contingent in Haiti continues with its efforts to recover Lalican, with support from Philippine Honorary Consul to Haiti Fitzgerald Brandt.

A total of 63 Filipinos have been repatriated to the Philippines last week. (PNA)
