DPWH sees positive impact of 'El Nino' on gov't projects

MANILA, Feb. 8 — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Victor Domingo sees positive "El Nino" phenomenon impact on government infrastructure projects.
"In the construction industry, the El Niño phenomenon is very advantageous for the government because we can accomplish much of the programmed works especially the priority projects of DPWH," said Domingo on Monday.
He cited his recent inspection in the on-going El Nido-Bataraza Road Project in the province of Palawan where he saw that good weather resulted in the immediate completion of DPWH high impact projects.
Domingo said that a good example is the progress of work in the three main packages of the El Nido- Bataraza Road Project namely the El Nido- Taytay- Roxas Section, Puerto Princesa- Aborlan- Abo Abo Section and the Abo Abo- Brookes Point Section.
The P1.8-billion El Nido- Taytay Roxas road section is now 61 percent complete, ahead of 29 percent compared to its scheduled accomplishment rating.
The project involves the construction of 49.7 kilometers of concrete road, construction of 12 bridges, drainage system and slope protection works.
The P 1.7-billion Puerto Princesa- Aborlan- Abo Abo Road Section is now 76.9 percent complete ahead of 41 percent projection.
The project includes the concreting of 51 kilometers of road, construction of drainage and slope protection works and installation of concrete guardrails.
Meanwhile, the P1.9 billion Abo Abo- Brookes Point Road section is now 67 percent done which is also ahead of 39.8 percent compared to its scheduled finish.
The project involves the construction of 41.2 kilometers of concrete road, construction of three bridges, drainage system and slope protection works.
Domingo added that once completed the road project will promote further development of the agricultural and eco-tourism industry which will eventually result in more job opportunities for the local residents in the area. (PNA) V3/LOR
