MANILA, Feb. 4 — A mild quake jolted the province of Ilocos Norte, north of Philippines Thursday but no immediate reports of death or casualty was reported.

Renato Solidum, chief of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that the 3.9 magnitude tremor occurred 9:31 a.m., and centered 12 kilometers southeast of Nueva Era town.

The quake was tectonic in origin, and considered shallow emanating 16 kilometers near the surface of the earth.

Intensity IV was felt in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Intensity III was reported in Sto. Domingo & Vigan, also in Ilocos Sur; while Intensity II was felt in Laoag and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Bangued, Abra; Callao, Cagayan.

Solidum said the agency is not expecting damage, nor aftershocks.

Solidum said weak to moderate earth shakings are normal in the country, as it lies along an active seismic belt called the Pacific Ring of Fire.

An average of 20 earthquakes per day occurs in various parts of the country daily, but most are not strong enough to cause damage.

The Ring of Fire is a band of volcanoes and fault lines circling the edges of the Pacific Ocean. Its seismic activity results from collisions between tectonic plates. (PNA)V3/MPC
