ILOILO CITY, Feb. 1 – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) various scholarship programs have benefited some 48 overseas Filipino worker (OFW) dependents from Western Visayas in 2009.

The OWWA 2009 accomplishment report here showed that last year the OWWA spent some P1.110 million for school expenses of 37 scholars under the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP).

The EDSP is offered to qualified beneficiaries or dependents who intend to enroll in any four-five year baccalaureate course.

A scholar is entitled to P30,000 financial assistance per semester.

On the other hand, four OFW dependents have availed of the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Fund (CMWSF). This is open to those who are interested to pursue courses in the fields of Science and Technology.

The OWWA spent some P116,000 in assistance to the four scholars.

Under the program, the grantee is entitled to a tuition fee allowance of not more than P10,000 per semester, monthly stipend of P3,500, book allowance, clothing and transportation allowances and insurance.

Meantime, six OFWs and their dependents have availed of the Skills for Employment Scholarship Program which is being implemented in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

In 2009, a lone OFW dependent was granted the privilege under the "Tuloy-Aral" project, which is given to children of less fortunate former OFWs. (PNA)
