Noynoy casts politics aside, extends sympathy to Remonde's family

MANILA, Jan 19 — Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on Tuesday cast politics aside and extended condolences to the family of one of the staunchest ally of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde.

"We extend our sympathies to the family of Cerge Remonde who passed away today. We pray for the repose of his soul and for the Almighty to extend his merciful and consoling hand to those he has left behind," he said in a statement.

Aquino and Remonde traded barbs last week following Aquino's dismay over the government's appointment of chief justice as Arroyo's term comes to an end.

Remonde said allegations that Mrs. Arroyo intends to name a new chief justice to prolong her stay in power were malicious and far-fetched.

Aquino, the frontrunner in presidential surveys, claimed the move is unconstitutional and vowed not to honor his predecessor's appointee should he win presidency in the 2010 polls.

Remonde likewise advised Aquino to focus on mapping out his platform of governance rather than "building lies" against Mrs. Arroyo's administration.

Remonde was found unconscious inside his Bel-Air residence in Makati City, and pronounced dead before Tuesday noon due to cardiac arrest.

Remonde's death is a "big loss" according to Malacanang because he is considered as President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's "closest confidantes." (PNA) LOR/MPC
