MANILA, Jan. 18 — Six people were injured after jumping from a stalled motor boat along the waters off Batanes province Monday morning, a ranking police official said.

Chief Supt. Roberto Damian, Police Regional Office-2 (PRO-2) director, said M/B Navigator of the Sea, operated and owned by Migdonio Faberes, was about to transport 36 passengers from the Port of Sabtang to San Vicente in Ivana town, Batanes at about 7 a.m. when it encountered mechanical problem.

Damian said the motorized boat was 15 meters away from the port when it stopped and was pounded by big waves.

”With the continuous pounding of big waves onto the motor boat, the passengers panicked and jumped off from different portion of the motor boat,” said Damian.

Damian said that elements of the Sabtang police station and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in the area subsequently responded to the scene, rescuing all the passengers.

However, six passengers were injured during the incident, two of whom suffered serious injuries, they were Magencia Cielo and Aida Hostallero who are now recuperating at the Sabtang Hospital.

Damian said the motor boat was subsequently towed to the shallow part of the port. Further investigation is ongoing, he said. (PNA)
