MANILA, Jan. 16 — Around 3,000 volunteers and supporters of Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential candidate Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro Jr. were up before dawn Saturday and trooped to the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City to join him in a five-kilometer fun run dubbed "Go For Green, Takbo Para sa Pagbabago."

"I am humbled by the number of volunteers present here today," Teodoro said as he ran alongside the volunteers who wore green shirts to show their support for the bar topnotcher and Harvard-trained lawyer's bid for the presidency in the May 10, 2010 elections.

Also among those present were Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and Teodoro's spouse, Tarlac 1st Dist. Rep. Monica Lousie "Nikki" Prieto-Teodoro.

"This signals the snowballing of support. Rest assured that we will repay the trust of the people," Teodoro said, adding that the outpouring of support "shows that efforts of disseminating information about our platform of governance are bearing fruit."

The Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard-bearer also said that he has chosen green as the color of his campaign because it is the internationally-accepted sign for peace, prosperity and fertility.

According to the former Defense secretary, a Teodoro administration will endeavor to reduce poverty by working to sustain a globally competitive economy.

"To reduce poverty, our strategy is to sustain GDP (gross domestic product) growth at 7-8 percent within the context of globalization. To do this, we have to expand foreign trade and investments," he said.

Aside from building up government agencies to eliminate red tape and corruption, sustained growth likewise requires a long-term plan for new infrastructure facilities to connect the country's islands, Teodoro explained.

"First, we must focus and build up our domestic capability in terms of infrastructure and institutions. We should be thinking of putting up more physical infrastructures of more roads, more bridges to link islands, more flyovers and underpasses that will be sufficient to accommodate the growing population of the next 50 years," he said.

"Here the premise is that we have the blueprint and national consensus behind it. Second, we must seek out and optimize opportunities in our existing multilateral and bilateral trade and investment regimes," Teodoro said.

Earlier, Teodoro said he envisions the Philippines becoming the “fullest and purest functioning democracy” in the Asian region and eventually leading its neighbors in global competitiveness and economic prosperity.

"My vision is for the Philippines to be a leader in the Asia-Pacific region," he said. “We can be the purest and fullest democracy in this part of the world and… and be an example to others," he stressed. (PNA)
