Comelec to announce final list of candidates for national positions on Thursday

MANILA, Jan. 13 — A top official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Wednesday that two more presidential aspirants who were earlier disqualified might be included in the final list of candidates for national position in the May 10, 2010 polls.

“I think two (more candidates) might be included,” said Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento.

The poll body is looking to release the final list of candidates for the national positions, presidential, vice-presidential and senatorial on Thursday, Sarmiento said.

He did not identify the two presidential aspirants. “I would not say. Let’s just wait for tomorrow.” <>Aside from presidential aspirants, the Comelec official said the number of senatorial candidates might likewise increase.

Sarmiento said the reason they decided to include the names of those candidates that were earlier disqualified was because they were able to prove that they have a political party and that they can wage a political campaign.

It can be recalled that in the initial list of the Comelec released last December 15, only eight aspirants for president, eight for vice president and 58 for senator made it in the list.

Meanwhile, Sarmiento said that they will promulgate the list of party-list candidates on Friday.

At least 306 groups applied to join the party-list election on May 10, 2010. (PNA) scs/FGP/utb
