Police launch manhunt vs. suspect in foiled slay try of Pangasinan election officer

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO, Jan. 7 — The Region 1 Police immediately launched an intensified manhunt operation against the suspects in the attempted slaying of the Assistant Municipal Election Officer of Sta. Maria town in Pangasinan on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, Juanito Villalba, 60, was wounded in a shooting incident that happened at 5:00 p.m. in Barangay San Alejandro, Sta. Maria, said Pangasinan Provincial Director Percival Barba, in his report to Police Regional Office 1 director Chief Superintendent Constante D. Azares, Jr.

Villalba was on his way home aboard his motorcycle traversing the national highway when two unidentified suspects riding in tandem on a red Honda TMX 155 motorcycle followed and shot him at close range.

He sustained a gunshot wound in the lower back portion of his body and was brought to the Sacred Heart Hospital in Urdaneta City where he is undergoing treatment.

Yolanda Villalba, 58, the victim's wife, said her husband is now in stable condition but he is still under police guard.

The suspects immediately fled and are now the object of manhunt operation by the combined elements of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, the Pangasinan Provincial Public Safety Maneuver Company, and the 1st Regional Public Safety Management Battalion.

Checkpoints were also established in the possible exit routes of the suspects.

The police recovered from the crime scene two deformed slugs and two empty shells of caliber .45 pistol, and are currently pursuing leads towards the identification and arrest of the perpetrators.

Mrs. Villalba said her husband received a black ribbon from still unidentified persons way back before the 2007 election. (PNA)
