MANILA, Jan. 6 – Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III may have been leading the surveys but performance-wise, the Tarlac lawmaker hardly impressed fellow presidential candidate and Senate colleague Richard Gordon.

Gordon pointed out that “Noynoy” and his family have had numerous opportunities to make the nation great but they have regrettably failed to deliver.

Gordon, the Olongapo City mayor who led the transformation of Olongapo from “Sin City” to “Model City,” said a leader must be accountable and should be able to show that he has done something to improve the lives of his people.

“How many more chances do you want? What is Noynoy’s capability in the local government? He had never been tested even as barangay captain. Even in legislature, what law has he done that made strong impact to the people,” Gordon said in a press statement.

“You have had in your family a president, a vice president, four senators, congressmen, governors, all positions in Tarlac but how is Tarlac? It is not Facebook that matters here; it is not your face that matters. It is the book of accounts. Where is the book of accounts on these people? Where is the accountability of these people? Once you have served, you should show your accomplishments,” he continued.

Gordon is running under the Bagumbayan – Volunteers for a New Philippines Party. Bayani Fernando, former chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), is his vice president.

Gordon was also the founding chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority who led volunteers in turning the former US naval base into a lucrative Freeport, which has become a model for bases conversion for other countries.

During his stint as tourism secretary, he was responsible for the marked increase in tourist arrivals and improving domestic tourism with his WOW Philippines program.

As a senator, he authored numerous bills that became landmark laws such as the amended poll modernization law, tourism law, food donation act, among others.

His running mate, Fernando, also offers a stellar record as an executive. With his good example and unbending political will, he also transformed Marikina City from being tagged as the country’s “rape capital” into a “model city” .

He also proved to be an outstanding MMDA head, with his traffic management schemes, sidewalks streamlining and urban beautification projects. (PNA)
