DAVAO CITY, Jan. 6 — A three-year old child was burned to death while his grandmother suffered third degree burns when fire razed their residence in Purok Mauswagon, Megcauayan, Calinan, this city, Wednesday morning.

Police Officer (PO) 2 Wilfed Zafra, desk officer on duty of Calinan Police Station, identified the casualty as Neil John Andang, 3.

The child’s grandmother, Susan Singson Pepito, 51, was taken to Davao Medical Center (DMC).

Witnesses told police investigators that at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Pepito was washing some clothes 50 meters away from their residence, leaving the child inside a room on the belief that he was already asleep.

Suddenly, fire gutted their residence, prompting Pepito to run back home to save the child. But despite attempts to rescue the child, she failed to drag her grandchild out of the house and instead, she herself suffered severe burns.

Investigations further revealed that the child was fond of playing lighters and during that time, some witnesses saw him playing a lighter.

The parents of the child were reportedly in Manila. (PNA) Jessie L. Casalda/lvp
