LCP asks SC to reconsider ruling on cityhood of 16 towns

MANILA, Jan. 5 – The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) on Tuesday appealed the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) affirming the cityhood of 16 municipalities in the country.

Mandaluyong City Mayor and LCP president Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr. said the decision will serve as a bad precedent because the SC has earlier declared as "unconstitutional" the laws that converted the 16 towns into cities.

This SC ruling, Abalos added, disturbs the legal principle on the finality of judgment.

The LCP argued that the public may lose its faith in the country's judicial system because of such decision.

This prompted the group to appeal to the SC to reconsider its Dec. 21, 2009 ruling that affirmed the creation of the 16 cities. (PNA)
