MANILA, Jan. 1 – A soldier was wounded following a blast near the Jolo Cathedral in Sulu on New Year’s eve, a military spokesman reported Friday.

AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner said they have yet to ascertain the identity of the suspect or the suspects responsible in the predominantly Muslim province.

Citing initial reports, Brawner said the grenade blast occurred around 11:20 p.m Thursday at the People’s Commercial on Ariola street, Barangay Walled in downtown Jolo.

The blast caused injuries on Marine Cpl. Dennis Hernandez, one of the soldiers assigned to provide security at the cathedral – about 30 meters from the blast site.

“He was hit by shrapnel at the back of his left thigh,” said Brawner of Hernandez. Brawner said the injured soldier was brought to a trauma center for treatment. (PNA)
