MANILA, Jan. 1 – The Quezon City Government on Friday cited the The Hall of Justice at the Quezon City Hall complex as a model institution in the promotion of environment-friendly waste disposal.

QC Mayor Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, Jr. said the Hall of Justice is not only a place for everyone’s compliance with laws but also an eco-friendly place

This was evident when the Quezon City government recognized the QC Hall of Justice as this year’s model office in recycling after it registered the largest amount of recyclable wastes during waste markets.

Belmonte said the QC Hall of Justice also bested other city government departments and offices in the award for the model office in kitchen waste management.

Meanwhile, the award for the model office in residual waste management has been given to the administrative management office.

The city government, on orders of Belmonte has stepped up efforts to implement waste segregation in all city hall departments and offices.

In an executive order, Belmonte cited as imperative the need to implement measures that would improve the existing solid waste management program at the city hall compound to facilitate proper waste disposal.

A temporary material recovery facility in front of the QC Hall grandstand, was being maintained by the city’s environmental protection and waste management department, to facilitate the proper disposal of wastes.

Under Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, all local government units are enjoined to implement the law on solid waste management, including compliance to the mandated 50% waste reduction target.

Already, the city government has put in place a system that institutionalizes ecological solid waste management projects and waste diversion activities in various levels.

Among the projects that the city implements to reduce the volume of solid waste include “Sinop Basura sa Barangay,” the Junkshop Standardization project, Waste Market in QC malls, Green School Brigade, Sinop-Bulasi sa Eskwela, among others. (PNA) LBV/JCA
