MANILA, Dec. 27 —Malacanang on Sunday alerted the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to be vigilant against terrorist attack similar to the foiled incident in the United States on Christmas Day.

Secretary to the Cabinet Silvestre Bello III said on Sunday, it was better for the police and military forces to be on ‘red or heightened’ alert to thwart any similar attempt of terrorist on Northwest Airlines flight 253 in US.

”We join the peace-loving nations in condemning this barbaric act. At the same time, our security agencies must be on full vigilance against possible similar attempts here. All agencies involving security of our country must be on red alert,” Bello also said in an interview over government-run Radyo ng Bayan.

Bello also told the law enforcers to keep watch over the production and sale of firecrackers, noting the foiled terrorist attempt in the US might have involved firecrackers.

"Di na dapat kailangan hintayin ang kautusan galing kay Presidente yan. Dapat alam ng tao sa gobyerno pagdating ng kapaskuhan tutukan ang paggawa at pagbenta ng pyrotechnics para maiwasan ang disgrasya, [We don’t have to wait for the President’s order, The people knew that during New Year the government intensified its campaign against the manufacturing and sale of pyrotechnics]", Bello said.

Earlier reports indicated the attempted terrorist attack on a Christmas Day flight began as Northwest Airlines Flight 253, carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew members from Amsterdam, prepared to land in Detroit just before noon Friday.

The commotion started with a pop and a puff of smoke, sending passengers scrambling to subdue a Nigerian man.

Travelers said they smelled smoke, saw a glow, and heard what sounded like firecrackers. At least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man, who officials said was trying to ignite an explosive device.

The Nigerian claimed to be acting on orders from terrorist network Al-Qaeda to blow up the plane. (PNA)
