MANILA, Dec. 26 — Cabinet Secretary Silvestre Bello III on Saturday praised the appointment of Court Administrator Jose Perez as Supreme Court Associate Justice, taking the post vacated by Senior Associate Justice Leonardo Quisumbing last Nov. 26.

He said Perez is "very capable and his integrity is beyond reproach."

Perez has served the judiciary for 38 years.

The Office of the Chief Justice Reynato Puno received the appointment papers of Perez, the 167th justice of the Supreme Court, from Malaca on Christmas Eve.

In a radio interview, Bello said the appointment of Perez was "one of the best selection of the President since Perez is homegrown in the judiciary. His competence, integrity, and dedication to the service of justice is unquestionable."

Bello said that judges, "while they are grateful (for their appointment), once they enter the court room, they are aware of their responsibility to uphold justice with impartiality. They have to dispense justice with what is in accordance to what is supported by evidence, due process, and the rule of law."

On the replacement of Associate Justice Minita Chico-Nazario, Bello said the candidate was still being screened thoroughly because the composition of the Supreme Court was very crucial being the highest court of the land.

The screening process is now ongoing for retired Justice Nazario's replacement. (PNA) RMA/OPS/rsm
