BAGUIO CITY, Dec. 26 —President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is now in this city to spend the holidays in The Mansion House for the last time as President of the country.

The presidential chopper carrying President Arroyo arrived around 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the presidential residence in The Mansion.

Mrs. Arroyo will also hold the last Cabinet meeting for the year 2009 at The Mansion on Tuesday.

Secretary to the Cabinet Silvestre Bello III, in an earlier radio interview, said the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday would discuss the recent drug haul in Samar and Aurora estimated worth more than P1 billion.

Bello also said Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) director-general Dionisio Santiago would attend the cabinet meeting.

PDEA intercepted 85.87 kilos of shabu in Dingalan, Aurora on Dec. 21, 55 bricks of high-grade cocaine in Eastern Samar on Dec. 22-23, and another 84 bricks of cocaine, also in Samar, on Christmas Day.

Bello, a senatorial candidate of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, also said the results of the election might be influenced by drug cartels.

The government would not just assess the drug situation on its impact on the national elections next year but also as a “scourge” of society, he said.

“We need to protect our children and the youth; otherwise, we will put in jeopardy the future of our youth,” Bello said.

The Palace official also said that the drug enforcement agencies must not just apprehend the pushers but must also destroy their laboratories that produce the substances that endanger the future of our country.

Tentatively, the President will also commemorate the death anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal on December 30 either at the Rizal monument in this city or in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.(PNA)
