MANILA, Dec. 26 — The Cabinet meeting on Thursday in Baguio will discuss the recent drug haul in Samar and Aurora worth more than P1 billion.

Cabinet Secretary Sylvestre Bello III said in a radio interview this morning that the proliferation of illegal drugs was “very dangerous and very alarming” and must be assessed on the basis of the country’s drug situation.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Dionisio Santiago will attend the Cabinet meeting.

PDEA intercepted 85.87 kilos of shabu in Dingalan, Aurora on Dec. 21, 55 bricks of high-grade cocaine in Eastern Samar on Dec. 22-23, and another 84 bricks of cocaine, also in Samar, on Christmas Day.

Bello said the results of the election might be influenced by drug cartels. The government will not just assess the drug situation on its impact on the national elections next year but also as a “scourge” of society. “We need to protect our children and the youth; otherwise, we will put in jeopardy the future of our youth,” Bello said.

The drug enforcement agencies must not just apprehend the pushers but must also destroy their laboratories that produce the substances that endanger the future of our country, he said. (PNA) RMA/OPS/rsm
