MANILA, Dec. 24 — Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim on Thursday called on city residents to avoid spending Christmas day either in jails or in hospitals by engaging in purely harmless merry-making activities.

The mayor said that as expected, the whole day will be spent on various forms of celebration, including day-long drinking sessions.

On this, Lim urged Manilenos to drink and just be merry and avoid getting into any trouble caused by too much drinking.

In line with this, Lim has directed the respective directors of the city’s public hospitals in five of the six districts of Manila, namely the Ospital ng Tondo, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Jose Abad Santos Mother and Child Hospital (JASMCH), Ospital ng Sampaloc and the Ospital ng Maynila (OM), to continue be ready for possible emergency cases.

Dr. Teodoro Martin, concurrent director of the OM and the newly-opened JASMCH, said there will sufficient number of personnel manning the city’s hospitals round-the-clock to attend to residents who may need medical help.

Meanwhile, Lim also told Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay, director of the Manila Police District (MPD), to step up patrol operations especially in chaos-prone areas.

He stressed that the sight of uniformed policemen, especially on board patrol cars, is an effective deterrent against the commission of crimes. (PNA) FFC/JES
