(Metro News) 2 hurt, 500 families lose homes in Novaliches, QC fire

MANILA, Dec. 17 – Two persons were hurt and close to 200 families lost their houses on Thursday afternoon when a fire of still undetermined origin hit an informal settlers' area near the Commonwealth Market in Barangay Batasan Hills in Novaliches, Quezon City.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Quezon City said the blaze began at 4:22 p.m. in one of the houses along Litex Road corner Commonwealth Avenue near the Commonwealth Market.

BFP said the two persons hurt were not identified immediately but were already given first aid by paramedics.

Fire quickly spread to several rows of houses in the area, sending residents into the streets with their personal belongings including images of Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The conflagration reached the fourth alarm by 4:33 p.m. More than 50 firetrucks of BFP-QC and the Association of Fire Volunteer Brigade Inc. (APVFBI) responded to the incident which was placed under control by 6 p.m.

Also responding to the scene were volunteers of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) of the BFP.

Traffic along the east bound and west bound lanes of Commonwealth Avenue was heavy due to the incident. (PNA) LAP/JCA
