MANILA, Dec. 1 — Malvin Alcala re-staked her claim as the country’s top junior netter, ruling two divisions in the Ming Ramos Youth Cup Victor Age Group Badminton Championships 2009, including the premier U-19 class, at the Rizal Memorial Complex badminton hall last Sunday.

But the 14-year-old Alcala, of Allied Victor PCOME, had to go through an extra set to turn back a stubborn Anna Barredo of Trace Whackers in the finals, 21-14, 19-21, 21-9, and add the U-19 plum to her U-15 crown she won over Janelle de Vera, also of Trace-Whackers, 21-13, 21-12.

Top seed Gelita Castilo, 15, also stamped her class over Nikki Servando, fashioning out a 21-8, 21-9, to pocket the U-17 crown in the tournament organized by the Philippine Badminton Association and sponsored by Victor PCOME.

Alcala actually racked up three victories in the event as she teamed up with Castilo to beat Danica Bolos and Gelli Ramos, 21-14, 21-13, and bag the U-19 doubles crown.

Castilo, who won the U-17 singles title, also partnered with Dia Magno to down Anna Barredo and Pia Fabros, 21-7, 21-12, and capture the U-17 doubles diadem.

Other girls doubles winners were Janelle de Vera and Danyll Escobar (U-15), Marina Caculitan and Joella de Vera (U-13), Chanelle Lunod and Quanxi Orillaneda (U-11); while Ariel Magnaye and Paul Vivas led the boys doubles champions by winning the U-19 plum with a 21-13, 21-13 rout of Ivan Angsico and Nikko Angsico.

Other winners were Philip Escueta and Jose Martinez (U-17), Anton Cayanan and Theodore Co (U-15), Vinci Manuel and Alvin Morada (U-13), and Bryan Bernardo and Matthew Bernardo (U-11). (PNA) LDV/LOR
