MANILA, Nov. 26 — Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. said on Thursday he believes that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has done a good job in defusing the tension caused by the cold-blooded murder of more than 50 people in Maguindanao last Monday.
Teodoro, the 1989 Philippine bar examination topnotcher and Harvard-trained lawyer, pointed out that President Arroyo’s order to the country’s security forces to go after the perpetrators of the gruesome killings with all the means at their disposal "speaks well of the Chief Executive’s intention to throw the book hard against the suspects."
At the same time, he said that the President's decision not to order a full military offensive against the suspected killers showed her commendable restraint.
”The situation in Maguindanao is extremely volatile at the moment. Any armed incident there involving members of the military, police or any other armed groups in the region could spark a full-fledged conflict,” Teodoro added.
The former Defense chief urged the country’s law enforcement and investigation arm to spare no efforts in finding sufficient evidence and the identity of the real mastermind so that the victims can get justice.
”Law enforcers this time must get the real suspects, not the fall guys as this would be viewed negatively by the families of the victims,” Teodoro said.
Speaking at the opening of the Porac interchange of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway in Pampanga on Wednesday, President Arroyo vowed that justice would be served for the Maguindanao massacre victims.
"The gruesome killings in Maguindanao constitute a most heinous crime. What makes it particularly so is the fact that it counts among its victims lawyers, media reporters and other defenseless and innocent civilians," the President said. (PNA) scs/PFN
