Filipino Efren Penaflorida, known for his “pushcart education” in the country, receives his CNN’s 2009 “Hero of the Year” award during a star-studded ceremony at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre Saturday (Sunday in Manila). Penaflorida received US$ 100,000 to continue his work with the Dynamic Teen Co. According to the CNN website, Penaflorida was selected after nearly three million votes were cast at CNN.com/Heroes. Actress Eva Mendes introduced Penaflorida as one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes, while host Anderson Cooper announced Penaflorida as the CNN Hero of the Year at the end of the evening, after a powerful performance by Grammy Award-winning recording artist Carrie Underwood.
