CEBU CITY, Nov. 24 – Newly-appointed Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales has asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to define the role of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the 2010 elections.

”We want our role to be defined by the Comelec and we asked that we meet again to get the precise description of our role in the elections of 2010," Gonzales said after a meeting with officials of the AFP Central Command in Camp Lapu-Lapu, Lahug, Cebu City.

Gonzales assured that the AFP will be the “defender of people’s rights and will only serve the interest of the people to make sure the election is fair."

He also dismissed fears that his predecessor, presidential aspirant Gilberto Teodoro, would have an advantage with the military serving in the elections.

”He is a good man. I think he will make a good president. But please do not think he will cheat the election,” he said.

He assured that he knew Teodoro’s character and it was not likely for him to cheat to win.

”I know him well and I think he wants to be elected fairly,” he added.

Gonzales also assured that each soldier can choose his own president and that the AFP as an institution has to remain neutral. (PNA) LAP/EB/ad
