MANILA, Nov. 20 –- Former Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Chair Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said on Friday he will continue to wage his campaign against illegal drugs even if he has left DDB.
“I will leave my post but I will remain fighting against illegal drugs. I need a higher position to do programs in waging war against narcotics,” Sotto said in a radio interview. He added that if he wins in the senatorial elections in 2010, he will make sure the big fishes will be put to jail.
Sotto on Thursday has resigned to run for senator under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) party.
Sotto, Vicente Castelo Sotto III (born August 24, 1948 in Manila) in real life, is a former senator serving two terms from 1992 to 2004. He is married to singer actress Helen Gamboa and four children, including actress Ciara Sotto.
Sotto is the brother of comedian Marvic (Vic), singer Marcelino (Maru), and movie bit player Val Sotto and a grandson and grandnephew of former Senators (Vicente Y. Sotto and Filemon Sotto).
Sotto said during a press conference at the DDB in Quezon City Thursday that he submitted his resignation letter to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday.
“I choose to take the path of public service through the gift of the Filipino people. Hand in hand with the Filipino family whom I have always desired to protect, I tender my endeavors for a seat in the Senate,” he said.
Sotto, who said he “knew fighting illegal drugs like the palm of his hand,” declared that the war on drugs would be his main advocacy should he win. (PNA)V3/JCA
